The price of mackerel has dropped significantly in the market this month, falling by 20-30% in retail and nearly 60% at landing centers. In October, the fish was sold for Rs 200 to Rs 250 per kg, but it now ranges from Rs 80 to Rs 150, depending on the size of the catch. Mackerel, a popular fish among pescatarians, has seen a sharp price drop, while sardines, another favorite, are priced nearly double due to a smaller catch.
Fishermen report that trawl boats have been returning with large quantities of mackerel—five to six tons per trip—while catches of other fish species remain minimal. This surplus has led to the significant price drop. Varadaraj Bangera, President of the Mangaluru Mechanized Fishermen’s Cooperative Society, explained that the high catch is becoming unprofitable for fishers.
A trawl boat typically requires 5,000 liters of diesel, costing around Rs 3.80 lakh. With the current low prices, fishermen are struggling to cover their fuel expenses. Bangera warned that if the situation continues, many trawl boats may stop going to sea until a more varied catch is reported.
