In a pioneering move, the Karnataka Coastal Security Police (CSP) unit in Malpe has introduced sustainable farming on its campus, making it possibly the first police department in the state to adopt such practices. Last year, the CSP started small-scale paddy cultivation on a patch of land, and now they are set to harvest paddy from two larger plots.
CSP SP Muthun HN explained that the department transformed vacant, sandy areas into productive gardens by bringing in fertile soil. Over time, the team grew various fruits and vegetables, including some exotic varieties. Expanding their efforts, they added waterlogged patches and successfully grew paddy, which is now ready for harvest.
In addition to crops, the campus houses livestock, including cows, a calf, and birds. The team also practices vermicomposting to enrich the soil and maintain healthy gardens. The CSP is working with the fisheries department to develop a fish pond, while the horticulture department assists with vegetable cultivation. Twice a week, all staff members participate in farming activities, which have become a relaxing and stress-relieving routine for many.
Despite the challenges of growing in soil affected by sea salt, the department has proven that it’s possible to cultivate successfully. The produce is primarily consumed by the staff, and local community members often visit to receive plants.
