The Sri Lankan Supreme Court has dismissed a petition challenging the constitutionality of the scheduled parliamentary election date of November 14. The court on Monday, comprising a three-member bench, rejected the petition filed by civil society activist Priyantha Herath, who argued that the election should occur no earlier than November 15, based on nomination deadlines.
The petition claimed that holding the election on November 14 violated the stipulated timeline following the closure of nominations on October 11. The upcoming snap election follows President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s dissolution of parliament after his victory in the September 21 presidential election, advancing the election timeline by ten months ahead of the scheduled date in August 2025. A total of 225 members will be elected using a district proportional representation system.
