The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday has announced the appointment of Sri Lankan legal expert Dharmawardena as the new Independent Chairman of its Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU). Dharmawardena takes over from Sir Ronnie Flanagan, who retired after serving 14 years in the role.
Dharmawardena brings significant legal experience to his new position. He previously served as the Additional Solicitor General at the Attorney General’s Department of Sri Lanka, where he handled various legal issues for the government and the Ministry of Sport. His expertise includes sports-related legal matters, making him well-suited to head the ICC’s efforts to combat corruption in cricket.
As the Independent Chair of the ACU, Dharmawardena will be responsible for leading the unit’s efforts to ensure the integrity of cricket. The ACU plays a vital role in investigating and preventing corruption within the sport. While Dharmawardena will oversee the unit, day-to-day operations will be managed by the General Manager – Integrity.
Dharmawardena is set to begin his role from Nov 1and the ICC expressed confidence that his leadership will strengthen the fight against corruption in cricket. His appointment marks a new chapter for the ACU, following Flanagan’s long and impactful tenure.
