Leipzig and Stuttgart both secured spots in the last 16 of the German Cup with strong performances in their matches on Tuesday night.
Leipzig faced St. Pauli and quickly took control, scoring three goals in the first half to win 4-2. Yussuf Poulsen opened the scoring in the 12th minute after St. Pauli failed to clear the ball from their area. Just five minutes later, Christoph Baumgartner headed in a perfect cross from Lutsharel Geertruida.
St. Pauli managed to cut the deficit to 2-1 when Morgan Guilavogui scored after receiving a cutback pass from Johannes Eggestein. However, Leipzig restored their two-goal lead with another goal from Poulsen before halftime.
In the second half, St. Pauli started strong and scored again through Lukas Klostermann, who deflected a cross from Eric Smith. As the visitors pressed for an equalizer, Leipzig’s Antonio Nusa sealed the game with a solo run and a goal in the 80th minute.
In another match, Stuttgart earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kaiserslautern. Stuttgart took an early lead when Nick Woltemade scored from Ermedin Demirovic’s assist. Kaiserslautern equalized just before halftime with a penalty from Boris Tomiak.
Chris Fuhrich scored the winning goal for Stuttgart in the 75th minute. Despite pressure from Kaiserslautern, Stuttgart held on for the win. Coach Sebastian Hoeness praised the team’s effort, stating, ‘In the end, I think it’s a deserved win for us.’
In other matches, Borussia Dortmund was eliminated by Wolfsburg, while Cologne, Bayer Leverkusen, Augsburg, and Karlsruher FC also secured wins.
