St. John’s (Antigua)
Shimron Hetmyer has been recalled to the West Indies ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against England, starting today (Thursday) in Antigua. He replaces Alick Athanaze, marking the only change from the team that recently toured Sri Lanka.
Hetmyer last played in Dec 2023, contributing to West Indies’ 2-1 victory over England in that series. He missed the Sri Lanka tour due to personal reasons but finished fifth in the run-scorers’ list at the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
In the series against Sri Lanka, Evin Lewis replaced Athanaze as an opener and marked his return to ODIs with an impressive unbeaten 102 in the third match.
The squad will be led by Shai Hope, with 17-year-old batting talent Jewel Andrew also included after making his debut in Sri Lanka. England, led by Liam Livingstone, has arrived in the Caribbean for their third limited-overs tour since 2022, with Jos Buttler still recovering from injury.
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy expressed excitement about the upcoming challenge, highlighting the historical rivalry with England and the energy of playing at home. The first two ODIs will take place at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua before moving to Barbados. Following the ODIs, the teams will compete in five T20Is at Kensington Oval and Daren Sammy National Stadium in St Lucia.
