The College of Community Sciences, formerly known as the College of Rural Home Science, is set to celebrate its golden jubilee on October 26 and 27. This institution, part of the University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad, is the only one in the state that focuses on rural and agriculture-based sciences.

The celebrations will be inaugurated by Labour Minister Santosh Lad. Events will include the unveiling of a Golden Jubilee Memorial, an alumni meet, the release of a commemorative volume, and an exhibition showcasing the college’s achievements.

Established in 1974, the college initially offered a three-year B.Sc. degree in Rural Home Science. It provided an important opportunity for girl students seeking alternatives to medical and engineering courses after completing their education. Graduates from the college have made significant contributions across various fields over the past five decades. Many have become teachers, dieticians, bureaucrats, scientists, bankers, and researchers. The college has also benefitted government departments in agriculture, horticulture, and women and child development, with many alumni serving as officers in these areas.

Currently, undergraduate and postgraduate programs are offered in several departments, including Extension and Communication Management, Family Resource Management, Human Development and Family Studies, Food Science and Nutrition, and Textile and Apparel Design.
