A team of experts from the Central Coffee Research Institute has visited Dakshina Kannada to assess the region’s potential for coffee cultivation. The deputy director of horticulture reported that the proposal is under consideration. The team inspected areas in Belthangady, Sullia, and Puttur on October 3, 8, and 9, but no decision has been made yet.
The visit aimed to provide support to local coffee growers with assistance from the Coffee Board and the institute. This organization specializes in various fields, including plant breeding, coffee agronomy, and post-harvest technology. The scientific team conducted thorough inspections but has not yet announced their final recommendations.
Currently, coffee is cultivated in nearby regions such as Madikeri, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan. The experts are reviewing reports on quality issues and climatic requirements. It has been noted that coffee could be grown as a standalone crop on vacant land or intercropped with arecanut. The horticulture department also reported damage to about 24 hectares of arecanut crops due to rain and wind. Relief has been requested for arecanut growers affected by disease and adverse weather conditions. Further scientific discussions are expected as the report is still pending.
