South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo on Wednesday has announced plans to work with the National Assembly to quickly enact a law to support the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. During a conference in Seoul, Han emphasized the significance of the proposed AI Act, which aims to create a legal framework for promoting AI while ensuring its safe usage.

“The government will closely communicate with the National Assembly to promptly pass the AI Act,” Han stated, pledging significant investment and support for research, infrastructure, and workforce development in the AI sector. The proposed Act on Industry and Framework for Establishing Trustworthy AI, first introduced in 2021, has faced delays due to political disagreements. Once approved, it would combine seven AI-related bills that have been proposed since 2022.

Additionally, South Korea recently launched a presidential committee focused on AI strategy and coordination of research efforts, with the goal of becoming one of the world’s top three AI leaders by 2027. President Yoon Suk Yeol highlighted the importance of AI in national capabilities and economic growth, stressing the need for collaboration between the government and private sector to enhance the country’s AI capabilities.

The newly formed committee, comprising 30 experts and senior officials, aims to strengthen South Korea’s position in the global AI landscape and develop a strategic vision for the technology’s future.
