The Indian entertainment industry lost ₹22,400 crore in 2023 because of piracy. This figure includes ₹13,700 crore from movie theaters and ₹8,700 crore from streaming platforms. Alarmingly, 51% of media consumers in India admit to using pirated content, with streaming services being a major source at 63%. According to a report on Wednesday.

Many people choose pirated content due to high subscription costs, lack of access to desired shows or movies, and the difficulty of managing multiple subscriptions. The report shows that piracy is especially common among younger audiences aged 19 to 34. Women tend to prefer OTT shows, while men often watch classic films. Notably, 64% of those who access pirated content said they would switch to legal options if they were offered for free, suggesting that content providers need to rethink their pricing and availability.

The report stresses the need for everyone government, industry players, and consumers to work together to fight piracy. It also highlights the importance of using technology to protect the rights of creators so they can earn money from their work.

Interestingly, piracy is more prevalent in Tier II cities than in Tier I cities. This trend is linked to limited access to legal content, easier availability of pirated options, and a lack of awareness about the risks associated with piracy. Overall, the findings call for strong action to tackle the growing issue of piracy in India’s entertainment sector.
