American tennis player Danielle Collins has announced her decision to continue competing on the WTA Tour, reversing her earlier intention to retire at the end of this year. The 30-year-old made the announcement via Instagram on Friday, revealing that her recent absence from the court was due to dealing with health challenges and the impact of hurricanes in Florida.
Collins spoke candidly about her struggles with endometriosis and fertility, emphasizing that these issues have posed significant challenges for many women, including herself. She expressed confidence in her medical team and acknowledged that the journey may take longer than she initially expected. ‘The DANIMAL story has not reached its conclusion. I will be back on tour in 2025,’ she stated.
This announcement coincides with her inclusion in the upcoming United Cup, where she will compete alongside fellow American Coco Gauff in the mixed teams tournament set to take place in Perth and Sydney from December 27 to January 5. The event serves as a warm-up ahead of the Australian Open, which begins on January 12, 2025.
Collins achieved her best Grand Slam result by reaching the final of the 2022 Australian Open, where she lost to Ash Barty. This year, she faced a quarterfinal injury retirement at the Paris Olympics and exited in the first round of the U.S. Open. Currently ranked ninth in singles on the WTA Tour, Collins aims to build on her 2024 momentum while navigating her personal challenges. ‘The only guarantee for now will be some more epic matches,’ she added.
