Bengaluru’s healthcare professionals are reporting a significant rise in viral flu cases among children, particularly adolescents aged 12 to 15. Over the past few weeks, hospitals have seen an increase in respiratory illnesses marked by fever, cough, and fatigue, prompting doctors to investigate the causes.
Srikanta JT from Aster CMI Hospital noted a 50% rise in viral flu cases, attributing the surge to seasonal changes and the back-to-school period, which facilitates virus transmission among children. ‘As schools reopen, interactions increase, leading to a spike in respiratory infections,’ he stated.
Supraja Chandrasekar of DHEE Hospitals confirmed that 99% of respiratory illnesses being treated are viral, with adenovirus, rhinovirus, and RSV prevalent. Symptoms include high-grade fevers and potential dehydration, especially among children with pre-existing conditions who may require hospitalization.
Ravi Kiran S at Sakra World Hospital highlighted the monsoon season as a contributing factor and recommended yearly flu vaccinations to prevent influenza infections. While vaccines target influenza, they do not cover other viruses.
Parents are urged to maintain preventive measures like frequent handwashing, mask-wearing, and proper cough etiquette. Immediate medical attention is needed for signs such as rapid breathing, extreme drowsiness, and persistent high fever. The increase in flu cases has not only impacted children’s health but also disrupted daily routines, with many schools reporting higher absenteeism among students.
