At the 2007 Vibrant Gujarat Summit, industrialist Ratan Tata remarked, it is stupid if you are not in Gujarat, highlighting the state as a prime investment destination. His words resonated with the audience, particularly as the Tata Nano project was set to arrive in Gujarat a year later after moving from Singur, Bengal.
The popular Twitter account, Modi Archive, shared the story of how the Gujarat government worked diligently to attract the Nano project. Initially launched in Singur, the Nano faced significant challenges due to prolonged protests, prompting Tata Motors to seek a more investor-friendly environment. By August 2008, Ratan Tata was looking to relocate, and many states, including Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, presented offers. However, none could match the quick and appealing proposal from Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Narendra Modi.
Modi offered prime land in Sanand at subsidized rates and personally supported Tata’s vision. Remarkably, all administrative processes were finalized within 96 hours, leading to the successful relocation of the Tata Nano project. Ratan Tata expressed his gratitude, stating, I thank Gujarat for making this our home so quickly.
On October 7, 2008, Tata Motors officially announced the relocation, with both Tata and Modi praising each other at the unveiling, emphasizing the importance of keeping such a significant project within India.
