BBMP to compensate flooded homes in Mahalakshmi Layout

Must read

The BBMP has announced compensation of up to Rs 10,000 for each of the 63 houses flooded in Mahalakshmi Layout on Sunday night. Many of these homes have faced flooding for the fourth time in two years.

Residents attribute the flooding to the narrowing of stormwater drains caused by the construction of cement retaining walls. After an inspection, the BBMP’s zonal commissioner proposed financial assistance for the affected houses. ‘We can provide up to Rs 10,000 per house. This assistance comes from our budget, as national disaster management rules require a 48-hour flooding duration for monetary relief,’ a senior BBMP official stated.

In addition to the 63 homes in Mahalakshmi Layout, the Kedriya Sadan apartment in Yelahanka also experienced flooding. One resident from Ganesha Block expressed frustration, stating that local MLA did not respond to her calls for assistance. ‘It took us about four hours to clean the house. I have lived here for 43 years, and due to the BBMP’s faulty drainage work, we fear flooding every time it rains,’ she said.

Many residents have rented out their ground floors, while some who were affected by last year’s floods have since vacated their homes.
