Cricket West Indies has named Shai Hope as the captain for the One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Rovman Powell as the leader for the Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) for their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Notably, several senior players, including Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Andre Russell, and Akeal Hosein, have opted out of the series for personal reasons.
In an official statement, Cricket West Indies mentioned that this opens up opportunities for new and returning players. Head coach Darren Sammy expressed confidence in the selected squad, emphasizing that the tour provides a chance to evaluate the team’s depth in various situations. He noted that the absence of senior players is due to rest and rehabilitation from injuries, but he believes the team can still compete strongly against Sri Lanka.
The West Indies will face Sri Lanka in a series of white-ball matches throughout October. The T20I series will kick off on October 13, with the following matches on October 15 and 17, all in Dambulla. The ODI series will start on October 20, with additional matches on October 23 and 26, taking place in Kandy.
