During summer everyone faces a shortage of drinking water. The local bodies have been struggling hard to supply sufficient drinking water to residents as water sources dry up due to hot weather. The conditions of animals and birds are no different. The animals and birds too have been facing hard times to find water.
But here is a village in the District where villagers have dedicated a lake for the exclusive use of animals and birds. The villagers of Mosambayanahalli in Mysuru Taluk have repaired a village lake, put up a board beside the lake instructing people that this lake is only for the use of animals and birds.
Around 9 years ago people faced a lot of hardships during summer due to a shortage of drinking water caused by drought. It is said that the shortage of rain had pushed villagers into trouble. When people were facing a shortage of drinking water how to quench the thirst of domestic animals? Cattles too were taken two kilometres to drink water.
Understanding the problem, the villagers decided to revive the lake by desilting it as they took up cudgels that in future no cattle should face water shortage. They desilted the lake through mass shramadan which helped the lake fill up and also store sufficient water. The villagers also put up board cautioning this lake is only for animals, and if anyone uses the water for other purposes they will be booked under IPC through police. For 9 years the lake is serving animals and has been the reason behind the increase in the groundwater level. No villager can use the lake water for washing vehicles and other purposes. The lake water is also clean, free from mud. Villagers say they are conserving water for animals since they cannot speak.
