On Friday, a mild earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale was felt in the Manipur-Nagaland border area, according to officials. The tremor impacted the northern Ukhrul district of Manipur and nearby regions in Nagaland, which also shares a border with Myanmar. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or damage to property from the quake.
Ukhrul has recently experienced violence due to clashes between residents of two Naga villages over a boundary dispute, resulting in four deaths and many injuries. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 30 km. The northeastern region of India frequently experiences earthquakes, with many measuring between 3 and 4 on the Richter scale each week. This has raised concerns among authorities, prompting efforts to construct quake-resistant buildings. The northeastern region is known to be the sixth most earthquake-prone area in the world, with a history of significant seismic activity, including a powerful quake in 1950 that altered the Brahmaputra River’s course.
