A section of the service road on Outer Ring Road near Karthik Nagar in Marathahalli, east Bengaluru, caved in on Thursday morning, leading to traffic diversions. The incident is believed to have been triggered by heavy rainfall on Wednesday night, combined with ongoing metro pillar construction in the area. As a precaution, traffic police have rerouted vehicles onto the main carriageway to ensure the safety of commuters.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), M.N. Anucheth, confirmed that the road collapse was identified by traffic personnel stationed nearby. “The road caved in near the metro work at Karthik Nagar. Traffic policemen noticed it and informed metro officials. Restoration is ongoing,” Anucheth said. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The damage consists of a small hole, approximately 1-foot in diameter, with visible cracks extending from it across the asphalt surface. Namma Metro engineers have cordoned off the affected area using plastic cones and are currently working on repairs to stabilize the road. The authorities expect traffic disruptions to continue until the restoration work is completed. Residents and commuters are advised to take alternate routes as the repair work progresses to avoid congestion in the area. Local residents have expressed concerns over the recurring road damage in the area, attributing it to the combined impact of metro construction and inadequate drainage systems. Frequent waterlogging during heavy rains has reportedly weakened the road infrastructure in parts of east Bengaluru, making such incidents more common.
