Malaysia is set to introduce a national cloud policy and an artificial intelligence (AI) regulatory framework, PM Anwar Ibrahim announced on Tuesday. The policy will focus on four key areas: enhancing public service efficiency, driving economic growth, ensuring data security, and promoting digital inclusivity.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for Google’s $2 billion data center and cloud region in Malaysia, Anwar emphasized the country’s ambition to become a hub for generative AI. He stated that investments from tech partners would be essential for building a secure and advanced digital infrastructure.
To further boost AI development, the government is setting up a National AI Office to oversee AI-related initiatives. Anwar highlighted several targets for the next 12 months, including the completion of the AI Technology Action Plan (2026-2030) and the creation of a regulatory framework for ethical AI adoption.
He also stressed the importance of fast-tracking AI integration in key industries, such as healthcare, public services, and energy. Through partnerships with industry leaders and collaboration across sectors, Anwar aims to position Malaysia as a leading AI-powered nation in ASEAN.
Additionally, Google Cloud has partnered with Dagang NeXchange to deliver sovereign cloud solutions tailored to Malaysia’s digital sovereignty needs.
