Unscientific’ breakwaters blamed for shrunk beaches

Beach enthusiasts have called for a scientific study on the construction of breakwaters along the coast, which they believe has led to a decrease in beach width. Yathish Baikampady, a beach tourism promoter, mentioned that the poor design of breakwaters has caused beaches like Panambur, Tannirbavi, and Sasihitlu to shrink and suffer from severe sea erosion. This has hindered water sports and beach activities.

Breakwaters, including one at Kulai, have been linked to reduced beach width. The lack of space on these beaches has made it difficult to hold cultural or sports events. Previous events, such as international kite festivals, have been affected. A team from Pune conducted a study on breakwaters, yet sea erosion has increased at Tannirbavi and Ullal. Significant sand accumulation has occurred at the northern part of the breakwater in Bengre.

Concerns were raised about the breakwater in Kulai, which collapsed after small stones were used in its construction. A large amount of taxpayer money has been spent on these projects. Panambur beach has shrunk significantly, and uneven sand formations make walking difficult. Issues were highlighted during a public hearing, but no action has been taken, affecting tourism negatively.

Fishermen from Kulai reported that breakwaters do not assist them. Sea erosion has made it hard for them to bring boats to shore. Experts have stated that while breakwaters are necessary, seawalls may not be needed where erosion occurs.
