In Kolkata, some Durga Puja organizers are modifying their original themes to address women’s safety in response to protests over the RG Kar hospital incident. One organizer plans to showcase three-dimensional images of public protests, while another will promote self-defense techniques to empower individuals. Additionally, one puja will feature a large banner near its marquee calling for justice for the doctor who was allegedly raped and killed at the state-run hospital on August 9, which triggered widespread protests from medical professionals, celebrities, and the public.
Each year, many puja organizers in West Bengal select themes that highlight social issues or current events, using their pandals, idols, and lighting to convey their messages. Sajal Ghosh, the general secretary of the Santosh Mitra Square Puja, shared that their spherical pandal will symbolize protest against injustices faced by women, incorporating lighting displays of flames and protest imagery. As attendees exit, they will hear chants of We Want Justice, blending the festival with a powerful message.
Meanwhile, the Shibmandir Puja Committee in Bhawanipur will use the tagline Suraksha na Atmaraksha (security or self-defense) alongside their original theme, encouraging young participants to demonstrate life-saving techniques. The Bhawanipur 75 Pally will also display a message emphasizing faith in the law, insisting that justice will prevail for the RG Kar victim.
