National Stand-Up Paddle Boarding Championship sees record participation

The National Stand-Up Paddle Boarding Championship has achieved a historic milestone with over 120 participants, marking the highest turnout ever for this event. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Pirappanvalasi Beach in Palk Bay, Rameshwaram, the championship will take place on September 28-29. Athletes from nine states will compete across various categories: sprint (200 meters), technical (4 kilometers), and distance (12 kilometers) in five divisions’ men, women, groms (under 16), defense, and open.

Organized by Quest Academy under the Surfing Federation of India and supported by the Tamil Nadu Surfing Association, this event sees reigning champions Sekar Patchai and Monica Pugazharasu returning to defend their titles. Competitors such as M Manikandan and Tanvi Jagdish will also vie for victory in a highly competitive field.

Upasna Mody, General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Surfing Association, highlighted how this sport is transforming lives in coastal towns, providing career opportunities for local youth. International Surfing Association SUP coach Jehan Driver noted the Palk Bay region’s potential for developing champions, while Arun Vasu, President of the Surfing Federation of India, emphasized the sport’s international prospects, including pathways to the Olympics. With such a strong lineup and record participation, this year’s championship promises to be both competitive and thrilling.
