In a remarkable mountaineering feat, a team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) has successfully reached an unnamed peak standing at 6,383 meters (20,942 feet) in the Gorichen range of Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang-West Kameng region. According to a statement from the Public Relations Officer for Defence Guwahati, this peak is one of the most technically challenging and unexplored summits in the area.
After facing significant obstacles, such as steep ice walls, dangerous crevasses, and a two-kilometer glacier, the team has named the peak Tsangyang Gyatso Peak to honor the 6th Dalai Lama, Rigzen Tsangyang Gyatso. This tribute recognizes his enduring wisdom and contributions to the Monpa community and beyond.
The expedition was one of the most difficult NIMAS has ever undertaken, with perilous conditions testing the team’s resolve. Nevertheless, through teamwork and determination, they successfully navigated the treacherous terrain to reach the summit, marking a historic achievement.
NIMAS has informed the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) of the ascent and is completing the necessary steps for the official recognition of Tsangyang Gyatso Peak. This climb not only celebrates the cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh but also enhances the region’s reputation as a prime destination for mountaineering and adventure sports, attracting enthusiasts from around the world.
