UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the worsening situation along the Blue Line, the buffer zone between Israel and Lebanon. According to his spokesperson, Guterres is particularly alarmed by the increasing civilian casualties, including women and children, reported by Lebanese authorities.
The UN chief is also troubled by the ongoing displacement of thousands of people due to Israel’s most intense bombing campaign since October. He highlighted the continued strikes by Hezbollah into Israel and expressed concern for the safety of civilians on both sides of the conflict, including UN personnel.
In a statement, Guterres strongly condemned the loss of life and called for an immediate de-escalation. He urged all parties to prioritize a diplomatic solution, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and infrastructure.
Guterres also reminded all actors of their responsibility to ensure the safety of UN personnel and called for adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006), which seeks a cessation of hostilities and the restoration of stability.
According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, Israeli airstrikes on Monday led to 356 deaths, including 24 children and 42 women, with over 1,200 people injured. Israel’s military chief, Herzi Halevi, stated that the country is preparing for ‘the next phases’ of its operations.
