The trawler, named ‘MV Baba Gobinda,’ capsized 60 km off the coast during a storm on Friday evening. Eight fishermen were rescued by nearby boats, but nine others were unaccounted for.

Massive search and rescue operations were conducted after the incident. The capsized trawler was brought up from the water and taken to Luthian Island in the Sagar area of South 24 Parganas in West Bengal. The bodies of the eight fishermen were discovered on the deck and in the cabin of the vessel. They were then taken to Namkhana while the search continued for the remaining missing fisherman.

The fishing vessel had left Namkhana in South 24 Parganas district for deep-sea fishing on Friday noon. Local officials, including Sunderbans Development Minister Bankim Chandra Hazra, former minister Manturam Pakhira, and local MP Bapi Haldar, were present during the identification of the bodies. It was stated that an initiative has been taken to provide financial compensation to the families of the deceased after the identification process is completed.
