Over 1,300 students and faculty members from various Indian universities have voiced strong opposition to the upcoming ‘India-Israel Business Summit’ scheduled for September 23 at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
A letter presented to the IISc director argues that hosting the summit would indicate support for Israel’s actions in Palestine, which they characterize as genocidal. The summit is organized by Think India, the Indian Chamber of International Business, and the Mysore Lancers Heritage Foundation.
The organizers state that the summit aims to unite business leaders, entrepreneurs, and policymakers from both countries to discuss cooperation, partnerships, and innovation.
Recent events in Gaza have escalated tensions, following a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in significant casualties and hostages. In response, Israel launched a ground invasion and extensive airstrikes. Reports from Palestinian health authorities indicate that over 38,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed, with many more displaced from their homes.
The strong backlash against the summit reflects ongoing concerns about the humanitarian situation in the region and its implications for international relations.
