New Delhi

On Thursday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the Indian Navy for its crucial role in maintaining peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean. Singh spoke at the second Naval Commanders’ Conference in Delhi, highlighting the region’s economic, geopolitical, and security significance. He noted that while India was once landlocked with coastlines, it now functions almost like an island nation with extensive land borders.

Singh emphasized that the Indian Ocean is vital due to its large share of global trade flow. However, the region faces challenges such as piracy, hijackings, drone and missile attacks, and disruptions to sea cables, making it highly sensitive. The Indian Navy’s efforts in anti-piracy and maritime trade protection have earned global recognition, positioning India as a preferred security partner in the region.

Singh urged Naval Commanders to continuously evaluate and prepare for various scenarios in the current volatile global environment. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernizing the Navy with advanced ships and submarines, focusing on self-reliance. Two-thirds of the Navy’s modernization budget over the past five years has been allocated to indigenous projects, supporting the growth of the domestic defense sector. The Defence Minister also stressed the need for better coordination between the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard to enhance maritime security. The conference is a key platform for discussing strategic, operational, and administrative issues, shaping the Navy’s future amid changing global dynamics.
