Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), died on Thursday due to pneumonia. He was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi on August 19, 2024, initially in the emergency ward before being moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). CPI(M) leader Hannan Mollah confirmed the news, stating, Sitaram Yechury, CPI(M) General Secretary, is no more. He was admitted to AIIMS.
Yechury was a key figure in Indian politics, serving as the CPI(M) General Secretary since 2015 and being part of the party’s politburo for 32 years. He also represented West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha from 2005 to 2017. His death marks the end of a significant political era.
