On Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the presence of Mithun, also known as the gayal, in the hilly regions of Dima Hasao. He praised the state’s forest department for their outstanding efforts in forest protection and management. Mithun, a large bovid native to Northeast India, including Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, and mentioned in the Mahabharata, has now found a new home in Assam. CM Sarma highlighted the department’s successful conservation work, noting that Assam’s diverse forests cover 26,832 sq km, or 34.21% of the state’s area. Assam’s protected areas include 7 National Parks and 18 wildlife sanctuaries spanning 4,938.53 sq km.
