Municipality regulates feeding of stray dogs in public spaces

Udupi

The Udupi City Municipality has issued a directive urging residents not to feed stray dogs in public or unauthorized areas such as roads, drains, school premises, bus stands, or crowded localities. The decision follows multiple complaints about stray dog feeding practices across the city.

To ensure the activity is carried out responsibly, the municipality has designated specific locations where citizens may lawfully feed stray dogs. These include areas behind Beedinagudde Rudrabhoomi and Adi Udupi Market, opposite Indrali Rudrabhoomi, near Parkala Welcome Arch, the Nittur sewage treatment plant, Raj Fish Mill, and the helipad on Adi Udupi–Malpe Road. Other approved spots include below the Bharatiya Vikas Trust on Perampalli Main Road, near Vijaya Veer Sangha in Bailur, and the Narayana Nagar turn in Kakkunje.

Individuals wishing to feed stray dogs elsewhere must obtain prior written permission from the municipality and will be issued identity cards for authorization. Feeders are also responsible for ensuring that the dogs are vaccinated against rabies and sterilized.

Municipal Commissioner Mahantesh Hangargi warned that abandoning pet dogs or puppies in public spaces is strictly prohibited. Pet owners must ensure their animals are vaccinated, sterilized, and wear collars. He added that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found abandoning dogs or violating the new regulations.
