Brentford
Ivan Toney, a key player for Brentford since his arrival in 2020, has signed a contract with Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli that will keep him there until 2028. Toney, who scored 72 goals in 141 appearances for Brentford, including 36 in the Premier League, is leaving after not playing for Brentford this season following head coach Thomas Frank’s admission that a move was likely.
At 28, Toney’s career at Brentford saw him make a significant impact despite a setback from an eight-month ban due to betting activities. He returned to action with a Premier League goal and earned a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad. Notably, he set up Harry Kane’s winning goal in England’s 2-1 victory over Slovakia and scored in the penalty shoot-out against Switzerland.
Toney’s journey began with Brentford in the summer of 2020 when he moved from Peterborough for around £5 million. His scoring prowess was evident as he netted 31 goals in the Championship, helping Brentford gain promotion. In the Premier League, he scored 12 goals in his first season and 20 in the next, ranking behind only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.
Brentford coach Thomas Frank praised Toney’s contributions, noting his impressive goal-scoring record and leadership. Frank expressed gratitude for Toney’s impact and wished him well in his new chapter, calling him a Brentford legend.
