On National Sports Day, which marks Major Dhyan Chand’s birthday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the legendary hockey player. Known as ‘The Wizard’ for his extraordinary skills, Dhyan Chand represented India in hockey from 1925 to 1949, scoring over 1,500 goals in 185 international matches. He played as a center forward and led India to three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956, and his birth anniversary on Thursday is celebrated annually as National Sports Day.
National Sports Day honors the contributions of Indian sports icons who have brought pride to the country on the international stage. In a tweet on Thursday, PM Modi stressed the importance of recognizing all those who have passionately contributed to sports and proudly represented India globally. He reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering an environment where every young Indian can aspire to excel in sports.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended his wishes on National Sports Day. He described Major Dhyan Chand’s life as a symbol of achieving any goal through dedication and relentless effort. He praised Dhyan Chand for elevating Indian hockey and inspiring a positive attitude toward sports in India, noting that the legend’s influence would continue to inspire future generations.
