Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the second round of the US Open 2024 after a tough four-set match against Australia’s Li Tu at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The young Spaniard extended his winning streak in Grand Slam matches to 15 with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory. This win puts Alcaraz on track to potentially become only the third man in the Open Era to win Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open in the same year.
Alcaraz started strong, taking the first set 6-2, but the match took a turn in the second set. He dropped three consecutive games and lost a lengthy 10-minute service game, allowing Li Tu to take the set 6-4. Alcaraz adjusted his strategy in the following sets, focusing on his powerful forehand and mixing up his play to exploit Li Tu’s mistakes. He finished the match in 2 hours and 42 minutes, earning his 60th Grand Slam win.
In his post-match press conference, Alcaraz reflected on his performance, noting, ‘I felt good on the court and hit the ball well. There are a few things I need to improve, but I’m happy with the win.’ He acknowledged the challenge Li Tu posed, especially in the second set, and highlighted his increased consistency in the final sets.
Alcaraz will next face Botic van de Zandschulp, who won his opening match against Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.
