Ex-IFS Sachdev calls Modi’s Russia, Ukraine visits unique

New Delhi

Mahesh Sachdev, a former IFS officer, described Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visits to Russia and Ukraine as unique. He noted that few leaders maintain strong relationships with both countries and have visited both Moscow and Kyiv amid the ongoing conflict. Sachdev remarked that while other attempts at peace have faltered, it remains to be seen if Modi’s efforts will yield results.

Sachdev highlighted that Modi’s visit to Ukraine on August 23 was historic, being the first by an Indian Prime Minister since Ukraine’s independence from the USSR. He also pointed out that Modi’s discussions with US President Joe Biden likely covered his Ukraine visit and broader bilateral relations. Modi’s visits aimed to reinforce India’s commitment to peace and address global and regional issues, including the situation in Bangladesh. Sachdev emphasized that India’s balanced approach contrasts with the US’s more partisan stance and reflects India’s strategic autonomy in global affairs.
