Over 3,500 families residing in the HMT ward of Rajarajeshwari assembly constituency, who have lived in this sheltered urban slum for the past 25 years, are now facing forced eviction. High tension wires have recently been installed in the area, rendering it unsafe for habitation. The district administration has issued notices, urging all residents to vacate the premises, sparking widespread anger and fear among the affected families.
The families currently occupy a 7-8 acre area in Ashraya Nagar. However, the district authorities have instructed them to relocate to a mere 1-acre plot in Gaudana Halli. The residents are outraged, questioning how so many families can be accommodated in such a small space. ‘We have lived here for 25 years, and now, suddenly, it’s deemed unsafe due to high tension wires. We can’t just leave our homes without any proper alternative,’ one resident expressed.
The community’s frustration is also directed towards political leaders, who they accuse of neglecting them except during election time. ‘They only come to us for votes, and now, no one is here to help,’ the residents lamented.
In response to the eviction order, the residents have taken to the streets, protesting against the government’s decision. They have vowed not to leave until a suitable housing solution is provided. The residents have also warned that any attempt to forcibly evict them without addressing their concerns could lead to dire consequences, for which the government would be held responsible.
The situation remains tense as the community waits to see how the government will respond to their demands.
