Ahead of the Paris Paralympics 2024, Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) President Devendra Jhajharia praised the appointment of Svayam as the accessibility partner for the Indian team. Jhajharia highlighted that Svayam’s involvement addresses the challenges faced by differently-abled athletes, ensuring their needs are met.
On Sunday, over 20 athletes from India departed from Delhi Airport en route to Paris. They carry not only their hopes but also the support and best wishes of the entire nation, along with encouragement from both government and private partners. This support aims to help them exceed the record of 19 medals achieved at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
Jhajharia spoke to reporters about the significance of Svayam’s role in providing accessible transport for the athletes. Svayam represents a new understanding of the difficulties faced by differently-abled athletes, Jhajharia said. By focusing on accessible transport, we are setting a new standard and showing the country what athletes with disabilities need.
He added that proper accessibility boosts athletes’ confidence and mental well-being, as it simplifies their travel and daily routines. Svayam has contributed specialized vehicles that allow athletes to remain in their wheelchairs during transport, enhancing their comfort.
Notable para-athletes, including table tennis stars Bhavina Patel and Sonalben Patel, para-badminton players Manoj Sarkar and Manisha Ramdass, gold medallist Krishna Nagar, and others, were seen at the airport ready for their flight to Paris.
At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, India achieved a historic haul of 19 medals, including five golds, eight silvers, and six bronzes.
