A public meeting held on Sunday in the city, endorsed the creation of a Karnataka-centric regional party. The event, organized by a group of Kannada software engineers and professionals, saw participation from prominent figures including Kannada writer Kum. Veerabhadrappa and veteran music composer Hamsalekha.
Hamsalekha expressed support for the new regional party, recalling past efforts to establish such an entity, including attempts to recruit actor Rajkumar. ‘I fully support the call for a Karnataka-centric regional party. Let today be the day we decide and announce this party, with a focus on the next Assembly elections,’ he stated.
Kum. Veerabhadrappa emphasized that a Karnataka-centric party would be crucial in securing the rights of Kannadigas. ‘Kannada will not be preserved by the educated elite alone; it is the villagers and unlettered who will sustain it. We need to take this message to them and raise awareness about the necessity of a Kannada-centric political movement,’ he said.
The event was organized by a diverse group including journalist S. Shyam Prasad, filmmakers B.M. Giriraj and Kaviraj, advocate C.S. Hariprasad, and several software engineers. Senior journalist B.M. Haneef and Kannada activist Anand Guru also addressed the gathering. Haneef highlighted the need to address Karnataka-specific issues, such as the potential impact of Lok Sabha delimitation, while Anand Guru discussed the declining Kannada-speaking population and the party’s role in safeguarding local interests.
The meeting, held at Basava Bhavan, Chalukya Circle, drew over 500 attendees and was promoted exclusively through social media.
