The Supreme Court on Tuesday urged doctors and medical professionals nationwide to return to work after a protest over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, leading the bench, highlighted the urgent need for medical staff to resume their duties. The court reassured the medical community that their concerns are being addressed with top priority.
The Supreme Court described the incident at the Kolkata hospital as horrific and a systemic issue highlighting the need for improved safety measures for doctors. The court ordered the formation of a national task force to propose safety enhancements for medical professionals.
The three-judge bench, also including Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, is handling the case suo moto, reflecting their serious concern over the safety of healthcare workers. They highlighted that the current issue affects the entire healthcare system, not just individual incidents.
The court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to provide a status report on the investigation within two days and requested the West Bengal government to report on the vandalism at the hospital. Additionally, the Supreme Court instructed the West Bengal Police to refrain from using force against peaceful protesters, including doctors and civil society members.
CJI Chandrachud highlighted that while peaceful protests are acceptable, there should be no state power used against them during this critical period.
