Irish rider Louis O’Regan dies after crash in qualifying session at Manx GP

The 2024 Manx Grand Prix was marred by tragedy when Irish rider Louis O’Regan lost his life following a crash during the event’s opening qualifying session. The fatal incident took place on Monday at Kate’s Cottage, a notorious section of the 37.73-mile (60km) mountain course. The crash occurred around 16:50 BST, prompting the session to be red-flagged and subsequently canceled, according to sources.

O’Regan, 43, originally from Ireland but residing in Didcot, England, was a seasoned competitor in the Manx Grand Prix, having first participated in 2013. In his debut race, the Newcomers A Race, he achieved an impressive 12th place finish. Over the years, O’Regan became known for his dedication and skill, with his best performance occurring in 2019 when he lapped the course at an average speed of 114.7 mph during the Junior Race.

Race organizers expressed profound sorrow over the loss, stating, ‘With great sadness, we confirm that Louis O’Regan, 43, passed away due to injuries sustained in an accident at Kate’s Cottage during the opening qualifying session of the 2024 Manx Grand Prix. Louis, an Irishman living in Didcot, England, was an experienced participant, having debuted in the 2013 Newcomers A Race and achieving his personal best lap speed in the 2019 Junior Race at 114.7 mph.
