The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Mangaluru Chapter, with support from various voluntary organizations, held a Silent March on Saturday to protest the recent murder of a doctor in Kolkata and demand justice. The march began at the IMA Hall on Railway Station Road and proceeded to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

MLA Dr. Bharath Shetty criticized the handling of the West Bengal incident, noting that evidence was tampered with and expressing frustration over the disparity in treatment between criminals and doctors. A petition was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner calling for better protection for doctors.

Dr. RK Ranjan, President of the IMA Mangaluru Chapter, condemned the incident and urged the government to enforce the Central act against violence to ensure the safety of medical professionals. He expressed strong support for the victim and called for immediate action.

Jessy Maria D’Souza, President-elect of the IMA Mangaluru Chapter, highlighted the participation of doctors, interns, and students from various fields in the march. She emphasized the need for women’s safety and vowed to continue the protest until the accused are held accountable.

The doctors called for increased security for medical staff, including enhanced police protection, the installation of panic buttons in hospitals, support for staff, and immediate compensation for victims. They also demanded the implementation of the National Action Plan. MLA Vedavyas Kamath and MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, along with students from various institutions, participated in the march.
