Former Sri Lankan captain Aravinda de Silva has reflected on the distinctive playing style once admired in Sri Lankan cricket, which seems to be absent in the current team. He noted that past teams, featuring players like Mahela Jayawardene, Sanath Jayasuriya, and Kumar Sangakkara, were known for their aggressive batting. Since their retirement, the team has struggled to find players with a similar impact.
Sri Lanka recently secured a significant victory by defeating India 2-1 in an ODI series at home for the first time in 27 years. However, they face a challenging Test series against England starting August 21. England, having recently defeated the West Indies 3-0, presents a strong opponent.
De Silva suggested that Sri Lankan batters could benefit from adopting England’s aggressive approach to Test cricket. He praised England’s positive play and acknowledged the difficulty of winning in England, but maintained that it is not impossible.
Mickey Arthur, former head coach of Sri Lanka, highlighted that the team struggles to adapt to its past successes. He pointed out that Sri Lankan cricketers possess unique techniques that may not align with other cricketing cultures.
