Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has decided to leave the pursuit of the 90m javelin throw mark to chance after missing it at the Paris Games. Chopra’s only legal throw of 89.45m earned him a silver medal, while Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan won gold with a throw of 92.97m.
Chopra, who has been dealing with a long-standing groin injury, managed to secure a podium finish despite the setback. He will compete in the Lausanne Diamond League starting August 22. After the Olympic final on August 8, Chopra began training in Switzerland, aiming to end the season strongly despite his injury.
Chopra acknowledged that his physical condition has limited his performance. He said that his attempts to throw further were hindered by his injury, which affected his technique and prevented him from giving his best effort. He plans to consult doctors about potential surgery after the season-ending Diamond League in Brussels from September 13-14.
Chopra also emphasized the need for better talent spotting in Indian sports and suggested focusing on multiple sports to identify the best talents. He noted that improving coaching and expanding sports programs could help India become more competitive on the global stage. Chopra intends to open javelin academies to support future athletes.
