All 26 crest gates of Almatti dam were opened, increasing the outflow to Krishna River to 1.5 lakh cusecs. Incessant rainfall in Maharashtra has raised fears of floods in Krishna basin in Vijayapura and Bagalkot districts. Inflow into Almatti dam is expected to increase due to the discharge from Krishna and Ghataprabha rivers. By afternoon, the average inflow was 1.2 lakh cusecs.
This was the first time this year that all 26 crest gates were opened. Water was stored up to 518 meters against the highest level of 519.6 meters, with a storage of 96.3 tmcft, or 78.7% of the storage capacity. The power generation unit of KPCL received 40,000 cusecs and all six units generated 261 MW.
A warning has been issued to residents to stay away from the riverbank. Inflow and outflow at the Hipparagi barrage on Krishna River reached danger levels, affecting Muttur and Tubachi villages. Similar conditions were reported at Hidakal reservoir on Ghataprabha River, affecting Nandaganv, Mirji, and Channal. The Malaprabha River at Navilutirtha dam also experienced alarming inflow and outflow, affecting Kittali.
As a precaution, Deputy Commissioner KM Janaki visited Nandagaon and Dhavaleshwar villages to review measures taken by the district administration. An estimated 203 villages in the district are expected to be affected by floods at Krishna, Ghataprabha, and Malaprabha rivers. Nodal officers have been appointed for nine taluks and 216 care centers have been identified to handle any flood situation.
