The completion of soil clearing operations on the road near Ankola Shirur, affected by a hill collapse, was announced by Deputy Commissioner Lakshmipriya. She informed that one side of the highway has been cleared, though vehicular traffic remains restricted.
Heavy rains continue to hinder efforts to fully clear the area, aiming to restore passage. Authorities, with assistance from HPCL, BPCL, and the State Disaster Management Team, successfully emptied a gas tanker weighing 15 tonnes submerged in the Gangavali river near Sagaderi village. Firefighting teams cleared the area for safe habitation, allowing villagers to return home.
Currently, 2,373 individuals are housed across 30 care centers, including 6 in Karwar taluk, 6 in Ankola, 5 in Kumada, and 13 in Honnavara. Basic facilities and medical aid have been provided to those sheltered.
Seven bodies have been recovered from the landslide site, where a Benz lorry and its driver are believed to be trapped. The district bomb disposal squad used a metal detector to inspect the vehicle. District Superintendent of Police Narayan reported that Navy officials, along with NDRF, SDRF, and fire department personnel, conducted searches in nearby rivers. Inspector General of Police Amit Singh visited the site, inspected the operations, and issued necessary directives for safety.
