Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh referred to the ongoing protests in Bangladesh over the government job quota system as an internal matter of the neighboring country. He expressed hope that the Sheikh Hasina-led government will resolve the issue swiftly. Singh described the situation as worrying and emphasized the importance of addressing students’ concerns.

In an interview with source, Singh stated, this is a troubling issue. Students’ voices should be heard, and we hope the Bangladesh government will address it soon. He added that PM Sheikh Hasina, who has been in power for multiple terms, is expected to restore order after discussions.

Singh reaffirmed that India will not interfere in Bangladesh’s internal affairs but wishes for a quick resolution. We do not intend to meddle in their domestic issues, he said.

The protests in Bangladesh are driven by demands for reforming the quota system for civil service jobs, which includes positions reserved for certain groups. In response, Bangladesh has imposed a curfew and disabled mobile internet to control disinformation, causing significant disruption.

Singh also mentioned that India will assist Indian students if needed. We will ensure the safety of Indians abroad and assist them if required, he added. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka is working with local authorities to secure and facilitate the return of Indian students to India.
