The Rakaskop reservoir, a crucial source of drinking water for the city, is nearly at full capacity. It is currently just 2 feet away from reaching its maximum height due to continuous rainfall in the Western Ghats region. The reservoir has a total height of 2,475 feet (754.34 meters) and a capacity of 0.6 tmc of water. As of now, the water level stands at 2,472.8 feet. With an additional 2.2 feet of water inflow expected, the reservoir will reach its maximum capacity soon.
The increased inflow from the Markandeya River has prompted concerns about potential flooding in Hindalga and the Ganeshpur pump house. Approximately 500 acres of land behind the reservoir are at risk of submergence, affecting nearby villages as well. Ravikumar, manager of L&T Company, noted a substantial water flow from the Markandeya River into the Rakaskop reservoir, predicting it could reach full capacity within 48 hours.
Precautionary measures are being implemented to manage potential floods, with plans underway to relocate people and livestock to safer locations under the guidance of the corporation commissioner. Senior officials, including those from HDMC, are addressing the arising challenges. If rainfall ceases now, water inflow into the reservoir is expected to continue for another 10 days.
