In a significant development for Karnataka’s infrastructure, MLA M.B. Patil disclosed plans for a second international airport in the city during the 153rd Legislative Council session at Vidhan Soudha. The airport, slated to be operational post-2033, aims to enhance the state’s economic and logistical prowess.

During his address, Patil emphasized the rigorous site selection process, highlighting the identification of eight potential locations, though the final site remains undetermined. Advocating for the new airport’s proximity to Bengaluru, he cited the strategic benefits akin to international airports in Goa and Mumbai.

We don’t have plans for airports in Tumakuru and Chitradurga, but we are considering a second international airport for Bengaluru, Patil stated during the Legislative Council session.

Patil acknowledged Bangalore International Airport Limited’s exclusivity clause, which prohibits the construction of another airport within 125 km of the Kempegowda International Airport until 2033. He stressed the need for proactive planning, estimating a seven to eight-year timeframe for land acquisition.

Having consulted with officials and experts, including Infrastructure Development Corporation (Karnataka) Limited (iDeCK), Patil disclosed ongoing deliberations over potential locations such as Dobbespet and Tumakuru, emphasizing that the airport’s development would prioritize long-term benefits for Bengaluru and Karnataka.

We face considerable pressure from various quarters, but the second international airport must be strategically located within a 50 to 60 km radius, Patil affirmed, underscoring the critical parameters of connectivity and passenger load considerations in its development.
