A Bengaluru-based IT professional, Anthony Sajith, has started an initiative to create Pink Rooms in government schools to help girl students manage their menstrual needs comfortably. His effort was sparked by an incident where his daughter felt discomfort at school due to a lack of facilities during her menstrual cycle.
In many rural areas, girl students travel long distances to reach school. Due to limited facilities for managing menstruation, many are forced to miss classes. Recognizing this, Sajith has set up restrooms with essential amenities to support these students.
At the Government PU College near Madanahalli Cross and the Government High School in Kurugal, Pink Rooms have been installed. These rooms include both Indian and Western-style toilets, a changing area, a shower, handwashing stations, a sanitary pad dispenser, an incinerator, resting beds, cots, a study desk, and a bookshelf.
The Pink Room at Madanahalli Cross was created by renovating an existing structure for Rs 2.5 lakh, while a new building was constructed for Rs 5.5 lakh at Kurugal. Continuing his efforts, a new Pink Room has also been opened at the Government Karnataka Public School in Kyalnur, along with a computer lab costing Rs 4 lakh.
The facilities were funded through the corporate social responsibility initiative of Sajith’s employer. Sajith, originally from Kozhikode, Kerala, has been a resident of Bengaluru for many years and actively engages in community projects through his Giving Heart Foundation.
