Maltese politician Roberta Metsola was re-elected as President of the European Parliament on Tuesday, securing 562 votes in the first round of voting. This election, conducted through a secret paper ballot, saw her achieve an absolute majority among two candidates. Metsola will serve as President for the first two and a half years of the 10th legislative term.
Born in Malta in 1979, Metsola has been a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) since 2013. She became the First Vice-President in November 2020 and took over as acting President after the passing of President Sassoli in January 2022. Later, she was elected President for the latter half of the 9th legislative term, making her the third woman to hold this position, following Simone Veil and Nicole Fontaine.
