Karwar
In the city’s Fisheries Colony near Habbuwada, heavy rains on Monday caused a hill next to a house to collapse, resulting in rocks falling and damaging property. The house belongs to Vinod Ulvekar, an ex-serviceman, who had recently purchased it.
The incident occurred around 5 o’clock in the morning, following continuous rains in Karwar since Sunday. The family heard a loud noise, alerting them to the collapse. Fortunately, no one was inside the damaged storage room when rocks fell, damaging its walls and other items. Additional rocks and trees fell nearby, causing concern among residents about further collapses.
Vinod Ulvekar expressed concern, noting they had previously warned the district administration and landowners about the risk of hill collapse and requested protective measures. Despite this, the incident still occurred, leaving him worried about the safety of living in the house. Officials, including the Tahsildar, have inspected the site.
Moreover, the collapse affected vehicular traffic on the Honnavara-Bangalore highway at the Kharwa-Yalaguppa junction of National Highway 69 in Honnavar. The highway was blocked, causing backups on both sides.
Authorities are assessing the situation and working to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
